Transmission Electron Microscopy

Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) analysis reveals crucial information on the internal structure of materials

Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM) expertise is widely sought, with a wide array of capabilities utilized in many different scientific, educational and industrial fields. Some examples include the characterisation of catalyst particle architecture, the assessment of size and shape for nano-metallic particles used in the electronics industry, the morphology of adhesive systems, and the exfoliation and distribution of nano-clay particles within epoxy systems for use within the aerospace industry.

TEM also provides important role within tissue analysis as part of metals and inorganic bioanalysis case studies, such as labelling with gold colloids and other staining techniques of tissue samples, to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.

Our experts combine state of the art transmission electron microscopy with decades of industry experience and essential insight. Transmission electron microscopes use magnetic lenses to focus magnified images onto phosphorescent screens or digital cameras, and utilises sample preparation no thicker than 60-80 nanometres, through which the electron beam is transmitted. It may include skilled ultramicrotomy and embrittlement by cooling, chemical fixation, and staining to impart contrast to the image. Ultra-fine particulates or dried latex materials may also be held on thin support films for examination.

TEM Analysis provided by our experts includes

  • Degree of encapsulation of titanium dioxide within polymeric material
  • Study of Biological Tissues to Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards
  • Size and structure of nano-inorganic materials and their dispersion within an epoxy matrix
  • Study of fracture effects on impact modifier particles and acrylic matrix using chemical staining techniques
  • Determination of metallised layer thickness and structure within packaging applications
  • Structure of carbon nanotubes along with EDX analysis of metallic seed particles used in their production
  • Study of the size and shape characteristics of fluoropolymer particles and the effect this has on parameters such as extrusion pressure

Intertek possesses the knowledge and equipment to undertake thorough Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis in laboratories situated across Europe and the US.
