Toxicological Risk Assessments (TRA)

A Toxicological Risk Assessment (TRA) is a safety evaluation of a product based on its composition and intended uses. Intertek’s board-certified toxicologists provide TRA services for products manufactured and sold in a wide range of industries.

The relationship between a hazard and potential for exposure defines risk. Intertek’s toxicological risk assessments determine whether or not a product poses a potential risk for the toxicological endpoints measured and, if desired, can be amended to also include suggested labelling phrases, warnings and warning symbols that may be necessary on the package of the product (e.g. California Proposition 65).

In response to business needs concerning the safe use of consumer products and art materials, Intertek’s large team of scientists, including several board-certified toxicologists, provide clients with a full range of services related to risk and hazard assessment of such products.

Our services include:

  • Toxicological risk assessments (TRA) of consumer products for potential to cause acute and chronic effects;
  • Hazard classifications of products in accordance with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) requirements under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) and Health Canada’s requirements under the Consumer Chemicals and Containers Regulations (CCCR, 2001) if hazard labeling is required;
  • Labeling of Hazardous Art Materials Act (LHAMA) evaluations for art materials intended to be marketed in the U.S.;
  • Creation of product Safety Data Sheets that are in compliance with Globally Harmonized System (GHS-SDS);
  • Assistance with California Proposition 65 compliance for products intended to be sold in California; and
  • A wide range of other services to help clients ensure their consumer products will meet government and industry requirements.

Our Toxicology Risk Assessment (TRA) services include:

  • Evaluation of the toxicity of the individual chemical ingredients of the formulation used to manufacture the product:
    • Each ingredient is assessed for its hazard or "inherent" toxicity such as acute toxicity, skin/eye irritancy, potential for skin sensitization, reproductive, genotoxic, or carcinogenic activity, in relation to the potential for consumer exposure to the chemical
    • Potential for synergistic or unpredictable adverse effects from the combination of ingredients in the formulation
  • Exposure considerations:
    • characteristics of the product such as physical form and size/volume
    • accessibility (e.g. liquid components)
    • intended use
  • Consideration of potential for misuse of the product
  • Packaging compliance guidance and advice on mandatory label requirements
