U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Recalls Analysis

In 2020, there were a total of 248 recall notices issued by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for consumer products. A total of 32 of the recalls were joint recalls with Health Canada.

Fire hazards accounted for 43 (17%) of the recall notices, followed by lack of child-resistant packaging which accounted for 36 (15%) of recall notices. Another 32 recall notices were issued for fall risk and 27 for injury hazards.

Essentials oils accounted for 13% of the total product recalls with 32 recall notices issued. This was followed by furniture with 26 recall notices (11%) issued for various hazards such as fall, tip-over, or injury. Off-road vehicles were issued a total of 22 (9%) recall notices, primarily for crash hazards.

 

Health Canada Recalls Analysis

In 2020, there were a total of 174 recall notices issued by Health Canada for consumer products. A total of 32 of the recalls were joint recalls with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Fall hazards accounted for 27 (15%) recall notices, followed by fire hazards which accounted for 23 (14%) recall notices, 19 injury risk recall notices and 13 recalls for labelling.

Product categories recalled included 24 for chemical products, 22 recalls for sports & recreation equipment, 20 recalls for electrical and electronics, and 18 recalls for household items.
