Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, will be presenting at the Annual CSSE Professional Development Conference taking place in Halifax, Nova Scotia from September 17-20, 2017.

The CSSE Professional Development Conference will focus on the theme of “Health & Safety in a Changing World – Leading Beyond Compliance”. Stakeholders in the industry will benefit from the conference’s four keynote sessions, 9 half-day workshops, 30 concurrent sessions and a stream devoted to mental health. This annual event will bring together health, safety and environmental experts from around the world to speak on emerging environmental issues and provide attendees with the knowledge needed to develop essential tools for improving the health and safety programs in their own organizations.

Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) issues have become more prevalent in today’s indoor environments. Building occupants have a heightened awareness of the health effects of poor indoor air quality, ineffective safety management, hazardous material exposure and impacts of environmental events. Large-scale wildfires, like those that impacted Fort McMurray in the spring and summer of 2016, resulted in indoor smoke residues in buildings throughout the city. Intertek Health, Environmental & Regulatory Services (HERS) expert, Kirsten Hoedlmoser, Senior Associate, Environmental, Safety and Sustainability states that "smoke residues from fires present a significant health risk to building occupants, and currently no robust regulations or guidelines exist to guide smoke migration and smoke residue assessments, or smoke residue remediation plans".

Intertek HERS was one of the first external consultants given access to the Fort McMurray site prior to the public's re-entry In June 2016. Kirsten Hoedlmoser will share her experiences from her effort to delineate and guide the remediation of the wildfire-related smoke impacts within Fort McMurray during her presentation in session 4D of the Concurrent Sessions on September 19th.  Kirsten's presentation is titled "Fort McMurray Wildfires: Smoke Remediation Lessons Learned, and the Need for Regulations and Industry Guidelines".  Attendees will learn what challenges the regulatory vacuum poses to remediation professionals and what regulations/guidelines are required to fill this regulatory vacuum to protect the public.
