Epoxy Cure by Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Thermosetting polymer systems based on epoxy resins have a variety of uses as adhesives and coatings. There are numerous choices of curing agents and additives for designing formulations for particular applications and variations in the components in a formulation which can impact the properties and performance of the cured resin. Understanding the impacts of different components on the cure reactions is necessary to optimize the performance of the polymer for particular applications.

In this case study, two test epoxy coating systems are compared to show the effect of a reactive diluent on the relative rates of epoxy and amine reactions and degree of cure using near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. This method can provide insight into how changes in an epoxy formulation can effect cure reactions and performance of a resin.
