Linear Thermal Expansion Coefficient Determination for Polymers

Measuring the linear thermal expansion coefficient (CLTE (α)) for plastic and polymer materials.

Linear thermal expansion measurements helps clients understand how the dimensions of newly developed polymeric materials are influenced by temperature fluctuations. The polymer laboratories measure linear thermal expansion coefficient and many other physical and mechanical properties of polymer and plastic materials. By measuring thermal expansion and contraction, Intertek helps clients produce plastic products that perform and fit in the field as designed when exposed to temperature changes.

The linear thermal expansion coefficient, CLTE (α), is calculated as:

α = ΔL / (Lo * ΔT)
ΔL Change in length of sample,
Lo Original length of sample,
ΔT Temperature change during test

Contact Intertek for more information on how CLTE expertise can help with product quality and durability.
