Dust and Powder Explosivity and Ignition Tests

Powder safety testing for dust explosivity and ignition.

Intertek powder safety laboratories measure potential dust explosivity and ignition issues for clients.

Minimum ignition energy (MIE), Mike 3.0 and particle size analyzer:

The Mike 3.0 device measures minimum ignition energy (MIE). Used along with the particle size analyzer, the lowest energy value of a high voltage discharge to ignite an air/dust mixture can be determined. MIE measurements are obtained by testing different dust concentrations and ignition delay times.

Dust explosivity (LEL, pMax, Kst, LOC), 20 liter sphere:

The Twenty Liter Sphere is used in the determination of explosion indices of combustible dusts. Dust explosivity, lower explosivity limit (LEL), maximum explosion overpressure (Pmax), dust specific characteristic (Kst), and the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC) can be measured using this device.

Minimum auto-ignition temperature of dust clouds (MAIT), BAM oven:

Minimum auto-ignition temperature (MAIT) of dust clouds in air on hot surfaces can be measured in the BAM Oven.

Powder and dust burning tests:

Burning tests determine the ignitability and combustibility of powders. The burning test can be used to screen materials for flammable solids classification as required by the US Department of Transportation and the United Nations.
