CORSIA - Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) was developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to mitigate CO2 emissions from international civil aviation.

Aviation accounts for roughly two percent of global carbon emissions each year due to CO2 emissions. To support the objectives of the Paris Agreement, which vows to keep the rise in global temperatures to two degrees or less, the ICAO adopted the CORSIA in October 2016. Using CORSIA, the aviation industry is planning for carbon neutral growth beginning in 2020.

Implementation requirements for CORSIA focus on monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). Beginning in January 2019, all airplane operators conducting international flights are required to track CO2 emissions every year using MRV.

  • Monitoring of CO2 emissions is based on fuel use
  • Reporting CO2 emissions from airplane operators to their State Authority, and from States to ICAO.
  • Verification from a verification body that CO2 emissions information is accurate and free of errors.

Beginning in May 2020, all aviation emission reports must be verified by a certifying body.

Nearly 80 member states intend to voluntarily participate in CORSIA by 2021. By 2026, participation will be mandatory.

Intertek Indonesia's CORSIA services have been recognised by the International Sustainability Carbon Certification (ISCC). It currently verifies more than 200 clients worldwide. Additionally, Intertek is ISO 14065 accredited and is on track to extend that accreditation to include CORSIA verification services in 2020.

Intertek's industry experts will not only provide verification of your CORSIA report but will also help you to identify other opportunities to improve your business processes and efficiencies.
