Standard: ANSI/NFRC 200 – Procedure for Determining Fenestration Product Solar Heat Gain Coefficient and Visible Transmittance at Normal Incidence

Scope: This test applicable to both residential and commercial fenestration products.

Applicable Products: Windows, Doors, Skylights, Curtain Walls

Test Procedure: This procedure utilizes computer simulation software to determine overall product Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and Visible Transmittance (VT) including frame and glass elements. Models created primarily for ANSI/NFRC 100 determination of U-Factor are used to determine the contribution of the framing system on SHGC. SHGC and VT are calculated using the WINDOW and THERM software programs developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The NFRC 200 procedure calculates SHGC and VT for summer conditions of 75ºF (24ºC) interior temperature and 90ºF (32ºC) exterior temperature.

End Result: The SHGC and VT of the product is determined. The SHGC can be used to determine heat gain through the products and the corresponding cooling energy demand. The VT can be used to determine the natural light coming through the windows. This typically is used to certify windows, doors, skylights and curtain walls for SHGC and VT and to qualify for Energy Star. This is almost always done in conjunction with ANSI/NFRC 100 testing for U-Factor.

Special Notes: This method applies to standard flat glass products. Alternative methods for SHGC and VT determination on other types of glazing are NFRC 201, NFRC 202, and NFRC 203.
