Standard: UL 790 – Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Roof Coverings (Building Integrated Photovoltaics – BIPV products only)

Certification Required: The Fire Test Sections are part of the standard that can be completed by Intertek and certified with the ETL Mark.

Scope: These tests are required for the fire resistance performance of roof coverings exposed to simulated fire sources originating from the outside of a building. There are three classes of fire exposure: Class A roof coverings are effective against severe fire test exposures. Class B roof coverings are effective against moderate fire test exposures and Class C roof coverings are effective against light fire test exposures. All three classes are not expected to produce flying brands during fire testing. These can be conducted on a wood combustible deck (sheathing boards or plywood) or a noncombustible deck made of metal, concrete, or poured gypsum.

Applicable Products: Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) materials that are used in Residential and Commercial applications for Class A, B, or C roofing systems.

Test Procedure: Intermittent-Flame, Burning-Brand, and Spread of Flame tests are completed over a pre-determined test deck construction. The manufacturer will determine how the BIPV configuration will be installed per their installation instructions and materials. The Intermittent-Flame test is applied to the surface for an intermittent length of time with constant airflow. The Burning-Brand is placed on the top of the BIPV material for 90 minutes. The Spread of Flame test is conducted by the direct placement of fire and wind for various amounts of time depending on the Class A, B, or C roof system.

End Result: The Intermittent-Flame and Burning-Brand passing the test is identified by penetration or flaming on the underside of the roof deck. The Spread of Flame test is measured by surface ignition over a period of time based on Class A, B, or C roof system. The fire test report is needed as one of the key tests for getting a product certified with the ETL mark.
