EU – EU Publishes Hexachlorobenzene Requirement in Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulation

The EU has published a limit for hexachlorobenzene under the Persistent Organic Pollutants Regulation. This new law will become effective on December 13, 2022.

The legislation was published in the EU Official Journal under Regulation (EU) 2022/2291 of September 8, 2022 to amend the POP Recast Regulation by setting an unintentional trace contaminant (UTC) limit value of 10 mg/kg for Hexachlorobenzene.

The European Commission has identified the presence of hexachlorobenzene as an impurity in some substances, mixtures, or articles, including chlorinated solvents, coatings, inks, paints and toners, pesticides, textile and wood applications, as well as plastics.

Background on Pursuant Organic Pollutant Regulations (Recast) (EU) 2019/1021

The persistent organic pollutants regulation is the EU mechanism for implementing various international agreements on pollutants including the 1979 convention on long-range transboundary air pollution on persistent organic pollutants, the 1998 Aarhus Denmark protocol on POPs and the Stockholm convention on POPs.
