Microfibre Shedding Testing for Sustainable Textile Solutions

Over the years, Intertek has pioneered in developing multiple capabilities to assess and analyze microfibre shedding from apparels and help brands, retailers and manufacturers better understand the impact their clothing has on oceans and waterways.

The Microfibre Pollution Problem

When synthetic fabrics like nylon, polyester, acrylic or spandex are washed, tiny plastic particles break loose and find their way into the rivers and oceans. Laundry operations contribute significantly to the global plastic pollution crisis. In fact, it’s been estimated that textiles, in the form of synthetic microfibres, contribute up to 35% of marine microplastics pollution. 

Intertek’s Microfibre Shedding Test Methods

At Intertek, our collective aim is to reduce the impact of fibre shedding from textiles. This endeavor is a part of our commitment to bring quality, safety and sustainability to life, where we offer both accredited and bespoke microfibre shedding test methods. These test methods replicate real-world scenarios, including temperature, abrasive action, and microfibre loss similar to that in home laundering. The abrasive action is a result of the frictional effects of fabric against canister, the low liquor ratio, and the impact of the steel balls on the fabric. Intertek’s method is a modification of the AATCC 61 for accuracy. 

Accredited testing solutions

  • Intertek conducts microfibre shedding testing according to AATCC TM212-2021, the Test Method for Fiber Fragment Release During Home Laundering to assess microfibre shedding in textiles and apparel. 
  • The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) Test Method - Intertek has 10+ labs accredited by TMC to perform microfibre testing with the TMC Test Method globally. Intertek is also a signatory for the Microfibre 2030 Commitment.

Intertek’s Bespoke Solution

Intertek provides bespoke scientific solutions for microfibre shedding tests which lead to an improved understanding of the impact of clothing on the marine environment. This is achieved by analyzing wastewater produced during a simulated domestic laundering process.

Using analytical evaluation to benchmark microfibre shedding, apparel brands, retailers and manufacturers can gain a better understanding of their products’ microfibre shedding during the laundering process. This can help you make smarter fabric selections that cause less microfibre shedding and build green fabric solutions.
